I love the internet. Truly, madly, deeply. 🥰
(Yes, that was a Savage Garden reference)
I remember the pure fascination and excitement I felt discovering the web as a kid. The excruciating sound of AOL dialing up, greeting people with “A/S/L?” in chat rooms, collecting rare items in Neopets, pouring out my deepest emo thoughts in my Xanga journal, spending several hours a day redesigning my MySpace profile…and the list goes on.
I knew then that my life and my career, was going to involve the web somehow, I just wasn’t sure in what capacity.
That level of curiosity and that feeling of unlimited potential that I had back then is exactly how I feel about this new era of web3. And just like it was then…it’s a little complicated and confusing.
There is so much more to learn than what is included in this post, but learning these basics will help you build a solid foundation and, hopefully, create the momentum for you to get more involved in web3!
Web1: Read.
Simple, static web pages
Web2: Read + write.
Blogs, social media, user-created
content
Web3: Read, write, own.
True ownership of your own content
and assets
What is a blockchain?
In short: blockchains allow digital data and assets to be stored, and publicly viewable, but not editable.
Everything in the following slides is built on a blockchain.
Check out etherscan.io for examples of Ethereum blockchain ledgers.
What is crypto?
Cryptocurrency is a highly secure digital currency, which is not reliant on any central authority (i.e. a government or bank).
Crypto is typically used to purchase NFT’s, or held onto as an investment.
Examples: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Litecoin, etc.
What is decentralization?
In web3, decentralization refers to a system of interconnected computers that work together to provide private, secure, censorship-resistant access to information and services.
Blockchains, NFT’s, DAO’s, and Cryptocurrencies are all decentralized technology.
What is an NFT?
A Non-Fungible Token is simply a record of ownership of a rare asset; such as: artwork, music, animated objects, group memberships, domain names, and much more.
We are just scratching the surface of what is possible with NFT’s currently.
What is a DAO?
A Decentralized Autonomous Organization is similar to a company, but where every member of the DAO has an equal voice in decision making and profit sharing.
Typically, DAOs are founded by a group of people who have a shared goal or mission.
There is still a lot more to learn and explore in web3.
Let’s do it together.
